BNF 67-The Authority On The Selection And Use Of Medicines

The British National Formulary (BNF) provides up-to-date, practical guidance on prescribing, dispensing, and administering medicines. The prescribing and dispensing/supply and/or administration of medicines should normally remain separate functions performed by separate health care professionals in order to protect patient safety. where this occurs, an audit trail, documents and processes are in place to limit errors. "Administer" means the direct application of a drug to the body of a patient by injection, inhalation, ingestion or other means. "Dispense" means preparing and packaging a prescription drug or device in a container and labelling the container with the information required by state and federal law. The “rights” of medication administration include the right patient, right drug, right time, right route, and right dose. These rights are critical for nurses.
