Impact Capital Africa kicks off to do investment deals

A ground-breaking two day conference kicked off on 2nd October 2018, bringing together impact investors from around the globe and investment-ready Zambian firms to discuss possible deals to bring much needed investment to local businesses. Impact Capital Africa has been developed through a collaboration between the Musangu Foundation, the DFID-funded Private Enterprise Programme Zambia (PEPZ) and Exigent Events, with the support of the Zambia Development Agency.

Impact investors are looking to make commercially attractive investments in growing businesses that can also deliver broader social and environmental benefits to the wider community. Zambia has not until now featured on the radar of many impact investors but Impact Capital Africa is aiming to change that.

More than 160 delegates have registered to attend the conference including 28 local companies who are looking to secure fruitful links with potential investors who, as a group, are seeking funding of approximately $100 million.

In talking about the planning that has gone into bringing Impact Capital Africa to fruition, Dr E.D. Wala Chabwala of the Musangu Foundation described how it started as just an idea a year ago but that “I am so proud this morning to see this monumental event now taking place. Unlike so many investment conferences, this is not a talking shop; this is the real deal”, a sentiment echoed by PEPZ’s team leader James Blewett who said that the emphasis of Impact Capital Africa is not just to talk about investment opportunities but encourage them to happen.

In declaring today’s conference open, the Hon. Christopher B Yaluma MP, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, confirmed that in bringing Impact Capital Africa to fruition, the team is “Creating a Zambian marketplace for impact investment” which will be of great benefit to the Zambian economy and its businesses.

It is envisaged that this inaugural Impact Capital Africa conference will be the first of many such events. Impact Capital Africa is backed by a process of preparation of companies so that they are truly ready for the investment process and can make the most of the opportunities that potential investment can bring.

As Mr Perry Mapani, Director General of the Zambia Development Agency, confirmed Impact Capital Africa “Offers an excellent platform for developing business investment opportunities and will generate long lasting relationships and connections now and for the future”.
