Campaign against infertility related stigma in Zambia

Lusaka IVF & Fertility Clinic resident doctor, Gilbert Ahimbisibwe, recently featured on Prime TV's Wake Up Zambia program to discuss infertility.

When couples have set their hearts on starting a family there is nothing that can erode their happiness more quickly than challenges with conceiving. Just like any other health challenges, infertility causes significant problems that affect the mental, physical and social state of those involved.

According to a research conducted by The University Teaching Hospital in 2007, up to 30% of women have problems conceiving for the first time and up to 60% have problems conceiving for the second or third time.

Worryingly, the majority of couples who suffer from infertility in Zambia, tend not to get the help that they need because of the stigma associated with infertility. Many get exploited by herbalists or doctors who profess to be able to help them. Many women take the blame for infertility when in fact infertility can be an issue with the man, woman or both. The infertility stigma leads to a high level of strain within a marriage. Sadly, this often results in divorce, especially when family members get involved with accusations, judgement and pressure.

Most common causes of infertility in Zambia

Contrary to popular belief, men and women are equally likely to have fertility problems. Infertility can be caused by a variety of factors that affect or interfere with how our bodies make babies.

Infertility is mostly caused by tubal blockages. In many cases, relatively simple treatments can be given to overcome these challenges.

The most common cause of infertility in women are ovulatory problems from previous infections such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), unsafe abortions that resulted in infection, a woman not being able to release eggs on a regular basis, or advanced age (usually 35 and above).

In men the issues are usually about the quality of their sperm. A man might have no sperm at all, have poor quality sperm, or not enough to reach the egg.

How Lusaka IVF and Fertility Clinic can help

When a woman is able to produce an egg and has a womb to carry a baby, Lusaka IVF and Fertility Clinic can help. So do not be disheartened. This specialist fertility team help in a number of ways, including but not limited to IVF, which stands for In Vitro Fertilization. It is one of the more widely known types of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). IVF works by using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures to help sperm fertilize an egg, and help the fertilized egg implant in the uterus.

Success stories

Since Lusaka IVF and Fertility Clinic first opened its doors in 2015, close to 500 babies have been conceived and safely delivered as a result of various treatment options on offer at the clinic.

So if you are struggling to conceive then don’t get sucked into believing this is your fault and that nothing can be done about it. Make an appointment with Lusaka IVF and Fertility Clinic for a consultation that could lead you to the pitter-patter of tiny feet.
