ISL colour run — a Lusaka fun run that raises money for children

Fun. Fitness. Competitive running. Chatty walks. Laughing children. Good food. Music. Friends. Families. 600+ adults and children. Super heroes. And a whole lot of colour. Organised by the International School of Lusaka and the Sam Damalis Trust Fund, all of this is in the name of raising funds for the fight against pediatric cancer in Zambia.

Raising funds for children with cancer in UTH

Early detection of cancer is essential. But the early detection rate in Zambia is very low due to how expensive essential diagnostic tests are. People simply can’t afford to pay for them. So the Sam Damalis Trust Fund aims to provide the funding, making essential testing available on demand in order to accelerate treatment plans and increase pediatric cancer survival rates.

In 2018 the ISL Colour Run raised K90,000 for children with cancer. For the first time, they partnered with the Sam Damalis Trust Fund and donated all money raised to the Cancer Disease hospital at UTH.

After consultation with the doctors at UTH the funds were spent on some of their most urgent needs:

  • Funding Twende Learning Centre — the little classroom attached to the ward for the children to learn and play in, providing air conditioning for the classroom and money towards teacher’s salaries
  • Funding Kayula — a home where the children go between treatments, helping reduce parents abandoning treatment due to the cost of accomodation when their children are out of hospital. Treatment is usually 4 days in 3 days out and families need accommodation in between.
  • A wet and dry vacuum together with an industrial floor cleaner which was donated. Keeping the ward lean is paramount as the children are highly susceptible to infection.
  • Privacy between beds was an issue so screens and curtain bays help protect very sick children from being in full view of every passing person.
  • With the remaining funds The Sam Damalis Trust Fund donates a weekly supply of 16 x 20 litre bottles of water and a 50kg drum of chlorine a month.

From a little idea to a big impact

The ISL colour run originally started as a 24 hour, 6 hour and 3 hour ultra marathon to celebrate the school’s 50th year. It was very popular so they did it again the following year. Since so many kids wanted to take part the school decided to make it more fun by adding colour to the ultra marathon. In 2018 the 5km colour run took place on the road rather than on track. That was an even a bigger hit. And so ISL teamed up with the Sam Damalis Trust Fund so that this yearly colour run now raises funds for the children’s cancer ward in Lusaka.

So be there to run, support your favourite runners or buy goods to raise further funds! Find out more about The International School of Lusaka who organises this event here.
