Last year in November, the Best of Zambia teamed up with Purple Tembo Media and launched an exciting project dubbed the #ZedVideoProject aimed at getting Zambia on video. We are creating quality online video content about Zambia. It was decided that the first video would be a Lusaka Markets video. Read about it here.

In order to raise funds for the Lusaka Markets Video, we chose an online fundraising platform known as Kickstarter. We had 30 days to raise what seemed like a whooping £1,950! The first two weeks were slow, with small donations trickling in. This would have been okay if we had all the time in the world but we didn’t. We only had 30 days and if we did not meet our target by the deadline, even the funds raised so far would be given back to the donors.

Running out of time

With a few days to go and not even halfway through to our target, we realised that we had to give our project an extra push. We did the math and found that if 100 people donated £13.85 (K122.55) we would meet our target. As this project was basically for Zambians by Zambians, we wanted to get more Zambians involved. So we introduced the concept of #100ProudZambians. This simply required a hundred proud Zambians to donate a sum of £13.85 to the project.

Fantastic response

We received a number of donations from proud Zambians and, interestingly, people who were not Zambian at all but also had a heart to see the project succeed. A lot of donors who responded to the #100ProudZambians gave much more than the required £13.85. Not only did we meet our target of £1,950 on time, we also raised an extra £222! Special thanks to our two major sponsors Daybreak Butchery and Sandy’s Creations who went way beyond the call of duty and each gave a donation of £500.

We could not have done it without you all. Thank you for all the wonderful support! We’ve asked our backers to send us their pictures so we can share them with everyone.

Did you donate to the #ZedVideoProject too and want a shout out? Email a picture of yourself holding up the #100ProudZambians poster to hello@thebestofzambia.com and we will add you to our gallery! Look out for more updates about the project here. We’ll be sharing all the news with you as it happens.
